We are currently accepting teachers for the first LTP at Moore Educator Seminar, July 9-13, 2013 at Moore College of Art & Design. Open to all educators and offered as a 3-credit graduate-level course through Moore College of Art & Design, this Learning Through Photography (LTP) seminar provides:

KEYNOTE CONVERSATION: Dr. Christine Massey (Tuesday, July 9, 10am) - A conversation on the importance of art and writing within a comprehensive curriculum to shape 21st century learners will kick off the seminar on July 9 with Dr. Christine Massey, Director of Research and Education at the Institute for Research in Cognitive Science at the University of Pennsylvania

DAILY SESSIONS: Daily activities and sessions will be led by a combination of The Galleries’ staff, Moore Art Education faculty, current K-12 LTP teachers. and Philadelphia Writing Project Teacher Consultants.

Kelly Ann Coughlin, one of our teachers at Harding Middle School, sent over a few snapshots of a project board she and her students created as part of a photography and poetry project for LTP at Moore. Exploring Zoe Strauss’ “South Philly Mattress Flip,” her students wrote poems to illustrate their interpretations of the photographs emotions.

This weekend is the annual Pennsylvania Art Education Association’s Conference in Harrisburg, PA. Deb Deery and myself have an exhibitors table for Learning Through Photography at Moore and Moore’s Graduate Program in Art Education.

On Sunday morning we are presenting “Designing Collaborative Teaching Programs,” and so far have had a number of teachers interested in our summer 2013 LTP Seminar and the Graduate Symposium on November. So far this conference is going very well!

Designing Collaborative Teaching Programs: Learning Through Photography at Moore will be presented by Liz Gilly, outreach/public programs coordinator of The Galleries at Moore and Deb Deery, assistant professor/visiting scholar in Moore’s Art Education department. The presentation will be a participatory discussion about the impact and development of the program, and how it was designed to meet the needs of teachers, students and communities in Philadelphia.

Learning Through Photography: Connecting to Students with Special Needs, will be presented at the NAEA National Convention in Fort Worth, Texas. The “Best Practices” presentation will discuss how the program works with Moore’s Masters in Art Education with an Emphasis on Special Populations program, and how it connects with and improves the literacy skills of students with special needs in schools through photography and writing.

Despite yesterday’s scorching heat I trekked up and down east Market Street to identify where each student’s bus shelter poster was installed and take a few pictures along the way. In the next week, a downloadable PDF map of the shelter locations and City Hall exhibition will be available on our blog, and Moore and Center City Districts’ websites.

Not only was yesterday the opening of Gathering Voice at City Hall and in twenty-one bus shelters as a poster installation along Market Street east, but I am beyond thrilled to announce that we also received a three-year, 150K grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) for Learning Through Photography at Moore!

This funding will help create a new Learning Through Photography (LTP) at Moore Regional Resource Hub for arts education and integrated learning strategies, and extend the existing LTP program through community arts projects in neighborhoods surrounding our schools. The project will include creating standard rubrics for evaluating the impact of LTP on students, classrooms, and teachers as the program grows in schools across the city. It will also actively involve home and family in the learning process, building on the success of the current LTP program, a pilot outreach project begun in 2010 currently implemented and sustained in ten Philadelphia schools.

The Institute of Museum and Library Services has extended support to The Galleries at Moore College of Art & Design to build and improve our education programs and outreach initiatives over the past few years. We are grateful and appreciative of their continued confidence in our programs that provide positive and long lasting impact on the Philadelphia community.

Now I am off to see if I can catch a glimpse of our bus shelters and snap a few pictures to share…stayed tuned!
